Paddler roles in Kamali'i O Ke Kai team
Six paddlers as one in a canoe. Each of the 6 positions has unique roles besides just paddling. These are:
Seat 1: Stroker
Seat one is responsible for setting the pace and stroke rate of the canoe. They will receive commands from seat 6 whenever relevant to help adjust the stroke rate to maximize performance of the team paddling together. Remember, faster broke rate doesn't always translate to faster movement rate as all paddlers must be able to pull hard at the same rate for the canoe to move smoothly. In addition, this paddler is responsible for monitoring the front of the canoe for obstacles such as shallow water.
Seat 2:
Seat two is responsible for setting the pace and stroke rate along with seat one. They need to keep good timing in respect to seat one as this can affect the entire timing of the canoe. Seat two should give feedback to seat one if the rate is hard to follow.
Seat 3: Count caller
Seat three is responsible for counting the number of strokes to determine the time for a switch. Our team executes a total of 13 strokes on each side before switching sides. Seat three shall call a "hut" at the top of their 12th stroke to initiate the switching process. Seat three is in a striking power position of the canoe.
Seat 4: Count caller (alternate/backup)
Seat four is in a striking power position of the canoe.
Seat 5:
Seat 5 can help seat 6 in steering (advanced) when the conditions demand extra help or when coordinated with seat 6.
Seat 6: Steersperson
Seat six is responsible for steering the canoe and has the final call on all matters in the canoe. They are responsible for the canoe integrity and safety of all paddlers. Safety being the most critical responsibility even beyond navigating the canoe. They will be monitoring that all paddlers are paddling in synchrony and adjust stroke rate by dieting Seat one to lower/increase it. They will help maintain paddlers motivated as well. Seat 6 also helps paddling the canoe once all safety and steering duties are in check.
